Downtown Lindsay is getting all ‘dressed up’ in preparation for the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Torch Relay that will arrive in town on Wednesday, December 16th.

Colourful banners featuring the Torch Relay logos were put up in the downtown BIA area. “We are putting our best face forward for the Torch Relay and the Christmas season,” said BIA Board Member Barb Evans.

The downtown stores in the BIA area will also be competing in a window decorating contest in the Olympic theme. Windows will be judged on Friday, December 11th.

The BIA has been working in partnership with the Torch Relay Community Task Force on plans for the Community Celebration. “The downtown store owners are very excited about the Torch Relay and we are proud to be involved,” said Evans.

To celebrate the arrival of the flame in Lindsay, there will be a Community Celebration held downtown at Kent St. W. & Victoria Ave. beginning at 10 a.m. The Celebration will feature local entertainment  by students from Jack Callaghan Public School, St. Dominic Elementary School and Queen Victoria Public School, the Lindsay Gymnastics Centre, The Odyssey Project, the Lindsay Triple Threat Theatre Group and The Strumbellas, a blues/pop band.

There will be lots for everyone to do as Coke and RBC will be providing activities at the Celebration site. You can have your picture taken with the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Torch while you sip on samples of Coca-Cola in a cool collector’s bottle. Take your RBC passport with you as you tour their Eco-Home and discover how you can make small changes to improve the efficiency of your home and save money.

“We encourage everyone to come out to the Community Celebration and be a part of this once-in-a-generation experience,” said Mayor Ric McGee.

The 106-day Olympic Torch Relay will visit more than 1,030 communities and places of interest in every province and territory. On February 12, 2010, the Olympic Flame will make its way to downtown Vancouver to light the Olympic Cauldron in a magical and awe-inspiring moment before a television audience of three billion people worldwide, signaling the kick off to the start of the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Winter Games.
